Talking without Speaking

Parents of twins often say their children are a little unusual or a bit special. But according to 16-year-old twin Gerald Scott, there are ways in which some sets of twins are quite amazing.

“My twin, Owen, and I have had a very special bond since we were born. When we were very small, we had our own language. Our mum says we used to talk to each other using our own special language.

We knew what we were saying but nobody else understood. Even our mother didn’t understand us! As we have got older, we have started using telepathy to communicate. Sometimes we don’t need to speak at all; we just use our minds. We can somehow send messages to each other even when we aren’t in the same place. I know it sounds weird, but I’ve always known if Owen was in trouble. Once he had a bad fall in rugby- he broke his leg and when it happened, I got this terrible pain in my leg.”

Although it sounds strange, telepathy between twins isn’t so unusual. There has been a lot of research that has proved that some twins h

ave this ability. One experiment involved eight-year-old Richard Powls and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in separate , sound-proof  rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his responses. Richard was then asked to put his arm into freezing cold water. At the exact moment he put his arm into the water, Damien’s responses went wild. And it was the same whenever anything  scary or surprising happened to Richard – his brother in the other room reacted too.

There have been cases between celebrity twins too. Actor Ashley Olsen tells us that, even when they are far apart, she knows when her twin sister, Mary -Kate, is going through a difficult time or when she isn’t happy. So, maybe it’s true – maybe some twins don’t need words at all to speak to each other.

Of course I would like to read other people’s minds. First of all I was always interested in what goes on in other brains, how they think on speaking and acting, second of all that would help me sense the truth instantly when someone’s lying or feeling different from what they’re showing. It would make everything easier in my life.

II.Which word to choose? Many English tests include choosing some words that students often mix up.

suggest-առաջարկել – offer առաջարկել

.  You may offer your help, money, another way of solving a problem but you “suggest doing something”.

Ես առաջարկեցի նրան իմ օգնությունը: Ես նրան կաշառք առաջարկեցի: Ես նրան փող առաջարկեցի: I offered him my help. I offered him some bribe. I offered him some money.

Բայց երբ ասում ենք «առաջարկել մի բան անել», պետք է օգտագործել «suggest doing something» ձևը: Իսկ երբ ուզում ենք անձին էլ նշել, ապա օգտագործվում է «suggest that somebody should do something»:

Ես առաջարկեցի նրան վերցնել այդ փողը: I suggested that he should take that money. Կարելի է այդ should-ը չասել: I suggested that he take the money. Այս քերականական երևույթը կոչվում է Subjunctive 1 կամ՝ Present Subjunctive.

There are five words which have the meaning of – ընդունել

adopt, accept, receive, take, admit

Օրենք ընդունել – adopt a law

The National Assembly of Armenia adopted a new law.

հյուր ընդունել – receive a guest

We receive guests from France last week.

ընդունել առաջարկ, հրավեր – accept an offer, invitation

ընդունել լավ, վատ, երբ նկատի ունենք վերաբերմունքը, տրամադրությունը – take

He took that news badly. Նա վատ ընդունեց այդ լուրը

Դեղ ընդունել – take medicine Take this tablet three times a day before meals.

Ընդունել սխալը – admit one’s mistake I admitted my mistake.

Refuse – հրաժարվել give up -թողնել, թարգել մի բան անելը

I refused their invitation with a good excuse.

I gave up that bad habit. Ես թողեցի (թարգեցի) այդ վատ սովորությունը:

He refused the job he was offered. Նա հրաժարվեց իրենց առաջարկված աշխատանքից:

He gave up the job he had been doing for many years. Նա հրաժարվեց աշխատանքից, որն արել էր տարիներ շարունակ:

learn-իմանալ, find out – պարզել, get to know – ճանաչել

I came the moment I learnt about it. Ես եկա, հենց որ իմացա այդ մասին:

You will like him when you get to know him better. Դու կհավանես նրան, երբ ավելի լավ ճանաչես նրան:

I failed to find out the details of the car crash. Ինձ չհաջողվեց պարզել ավտովթարի մանրամասները:

Convince somebody of something – համոզել մեկին մի բանում, persuade somebody to do something – համոզել մեկին մի բան անել

You can’t convince me of anything. Դուք չեք կարող ինձ որևէ բանում համոզել:

They persuaded us to join them – Նրանք մեզ համոզեցին միանալ իրենց:

Escape – խուսափել մի բանից փրկվելու իմաստով, avoid – խուսափել հանդիպումից, սխալներից

He escaped punishment, car crash, death,… Նա խուսափեց պատժից, ավտովթարից, մահից. ..

I avoid meeting the principal. Ես խուսափում եմ տնօրենին հանդիպելուց:

retire – թոշակի անցնել, resign – հրաժարական տալ

Levon Ter-Petrosyan resigned in 1998.

He retired at the age of 63.

Treat – բուժել (բուժման ընթացքը), cure – բուժել (վերջնականապես ապաքինել)

Worry about somebody/something -անհանգստանալ մեկի/մի բանի համար, bother somebody-անհանգստացնել մեկին, bother to do something-նեղություն կրել մի բան անել

Don’t worry about him. He is recovering.

Don’t bother. The suitcase is not heavy.

Don’t bother him. He is working.

Translate the sentences into English

11. Նա այնքան հաստակողն (stubborn) է, որ չես կարող համոզել նրան որևէ բանում: He is so stubborn that you can’t convince him of anything.
12. Եթե կարողանաս համոզել նրան, որ մեզ հետ ճամփորդության գնա, նա դուրս կգա այդ ընկճված վիճակից: If you can convince him to go on a trip with us, he’ll get out of that depressed state.
13. Մարդկանց ավելի լավ ես ճանաչում, երբ ճամփորդում ես նրանց հետ: You get to know people better when you travel with them.
14. Ես չեմ կարող որևէ բան ասել: Գնա և ինքդ պարզիր ճշմարտությունը: I can’t say anything. Go and find out the truth for yourself.
